Backsplash Tile Alternatives to White Subway

The countdown is on! We will have our new house early next week! I’ve been in full planning mode around here and am really looking forward to making the home our own. I’ve created a binder full of home design plans to brighten up the place. Our new home is a little wooded and cozy, so I’m hoping that by removing a few walls and adding white details will bring some much-needed light. Now, along with other light and bright kitchen details, I’m on the hunt for white backsplash tile. And although I love a good subway, I found some other options that are making it hard to decide!

The geometric tile in this cute little corner makes it interesting and the white grout keeps it from feeling fussy I think. I also love that it reminds me of a quilt!

White tile is a great way to brighten up a space and can feel really modern. It also looks great with other details like wood shelves, black hardware, and even my favorite black kitchen sink.

Wondering if you can install shelves on tile backsplash? Yes, you can! I’ve done it a few times and outlined some tips in my guide: How to Make Wood Shelves.

What is a good classic tile backsplash?

Subway tile is considered one of the most classic tile backsplash ideas. It’s simple, clean, and fairly easy to install. I like to use larger subway tiles to take a little twist on the classic. You can see this in my Small Kitchen Remodel.

However, Hexagon tiles, Chevron, and Herringbone design are all very classic backsplash options as well!

This hexagon backsplash tile is part of one of my favorite kitchen before and after transformation! The simple shelving and clean countertop make the hexagons seem less busy.

Kitchen Backsplash Trends 2024

While I’m always a little cautious of trends in general (I mean we’ve all had those trendy design mistakes, right?) I really love the play on a geometric approach we’re seeing with kitchen backsplashes.

Rounded shapes like Scallop Tiles or interesting Picket Fence shape are both contemporary options that also seem like they’ll stand the test of time!
