Front Porch Decor Ideas

Walking in the front door of a home is a little bit like opening a gift, welcoming people into your space. The exterior entrance is one of my favorite places to decorate because it’s one area where a few changes often make a huge difference. I’ve lived in my fair share of homes (life, divorce, etc.) and this is one of the first areas I tackle to make my own. Whether it’s painting doors, adding fresh exterior lights, or simply choosing the best decorative items, a few small updates go a long way. If you’re wondering how to decorate a front porch this is for you. Here, I’ll take a look back at some of my best projects and share front porch decor ideas that are easy to add right away.

Easy Front Porch Updates

I’ve found that easy front porch updates go a long way in changing the curb appeal of a house. Over the years, I’ve updated several homes and I’m always taken back by how little things make a big difference here. In one home, simply painting the and changing out some decor was enough to make it feel more polished and welcoming. I have a little list of some of my favorite easy front porch projects:

  • Painting the front door
  • Updating outdoor lighting
  • Replacing old house numbers
  • Swapping out the doormat
  • Adding large planters
  • Updating door hardware
  • Incorporating outdoor pillows or seating

Layered Welcome Mat Ideas

To start things off, I like the idea of layering front porch mats because it usually accomplishes a couple of things. First, it might be helpful to have more usable space of a rug (we have lots of cleats getting dropped off on mine!). Second, it works to add visual proportion to a space. A welcome mat itself is usually a little small. By layering it on something longer like a runner creates a more balanced look for the whole front door.

On a larger front porch area, I’ve layered a wider welcome mat on top of a large 5 x7′ woven are rug. This was a covered front porch so the sisal fibers worked well. Overall, look for outdoor friendly fibers and brands for durability. I avoid using indoor rugs outside, it might look cute but it will not last long at all.

Painting Front Doors

One of the best ways to update a front porch is painting the front door. This definitely goes a long way in making a big difference to a home. It can make house that feels dated instantly more modern and fresh. I typically like to stick with classic colors and often use a true, neutral black. You can see my Black Front Door Project where I used Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black for some inspiration.

Of course, if you have a wood front door, those can be updated as well. In one of my homes, I replaced the doors with new Douglas Fir Double Doors because the previous doors were damaged and unable to be saved. However, if they had been in better shape, I would’ve cleaned, sanded, and used a lighter, neutral wood stain.

Group Front Porch Plants & Decor

When it comes to front porch plants, I like to group them together. I’ve found this makes the whole area feel more grounded and proportionate. To do this, I vary plant heights and types trying to use different shades of green and types of leaves. I even use some herbs which are easy to find and grow – plus you can always snip some off for cooking!

One of my favorite tips is using a plant stand to instantly achieve height next to the doors. This adds balance without investing in a particularly huge plant. Then, I follow the rule of threes, and group two more smaller plants with the planter. I’m sharing some of my favorite front porch decor below and many of my actual items are found on my Amazon storefront.

To help with decorating your front porch, I’ve gathered up some of my front outdoor items. Many of these are what I’ve used in my homes over the years or ones I’d recommend to friend. In general, I look for pieces that are versatile, have high impact, and are generally affordable.

Front Porch Decor FAQs

How difficult is it to replace a front door handle or lock set?

Replacing a front door handle is usually a beginner-friendly DIY project that takes about 30โ€“60 minutes. Most modern handle sets fit standard pre-drilled doors and only require a screwdriver for installation. Before purchasing new hardware, measure your existing backset and check whether your current setup uses a separate deadbolt or integrated handle set. Matte black, aged brass, and satin nickel are some of the most versatile finishes for curb appeal.

What is the best black paint for front door?

The best black paint for a front door is one that is a neutral black or slightly warm. Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black is a true, neutral black without hidden undertones. This makes it’s easy to use with other paint colors and elements. Another good blakc paint option is Benjamin Moore Onyx. It is a deep black that is slightly warm which works with rocks, bricks, and creates a soft welcoming aesthetic.

How high should house numbers be installed?

House numbers should be clearly visible from the street. They are typically installed around 48โ€“60 inches from the ground near the front door or garage. Updating house numbers can make a big impact on curb appeal.

What is the best material for an outdoor rug?

There are a few options for outdoor rug materials. Jute, recycled plastic, and polypropylene work best. When choosing a rug, consider the climate and exposure to elements. Look for rugs labeled UV-resistant and mildew-resistant for the best durability outdoors.
