Before You Buy Another Storage Organizer

Ever feel like you could have all the baskets in the world and still never be organized? I certainly feel that way. Years ago, I thought another bin, basket, tub, or rack would solve all of my organizational issues. Boy, was I wrong. This is a common issue – focusing more on just containing items rather than actual functional organization. I realized it was more about methods and processes (which I’ve shared in other posts) and once those are under control, then it’s time to choose a storage organizer. But wait! You want to make sure you read this first!

Organization First Steps

Ok, here it is. Before buying any organizers – whether it’s a tray, bin, tub, or rack, make sure you do these two things. This is crucial for functional organization otherwise you’ll just be packing more stuff away.

  • Decide if an item is worth keeping. Sounds simple but we tend to mindlessly just stuff things in storage bins without giving it a second thought.
  • Next, determine where the item should be every single day. For example, does it need to be close to the front door or accessible to children every morning? Does it belong on the kitchen counter or would it function better kept in the pantry?

How to Choose a Storage Organizer

Once those organizational strategies have been used, now it’s time to choose the best organizer. When it comes to deciding, I have a basic rule: a storage solution must serve two functions

It could be different variables like make the good use of wall space AND keep items off the floor but either way, I try to make sure it serves to functions. Otherwise, we just end up with more and more plastic tubs and who needs that?

Here are some examples:

  • Coat Rack: A specific place to hang coats and makes good use of wall space.
  • Knife Organizer: Keeps knives collected and clears off the counter.
  • Woven Box: Holds linens or other items and fits perfectly on closet shelf leaving no wasted space (and adds warmth & texture – bonus!)
  • Shoe Cabinet: These tuck away shows while also serving as a minimal entryway table – absolute genius!

Storage Organizer FAQs

How do I organize without buying more stuff?

Organizing without buying more bins and baskets is possible! It helps to start by grouping items by function, not category. Use existing shelves, drawers, and wall space before adding containers.

What is functional home organization?

Functional home organization focuses on how your home is actually used day-to-day, not how it looks in photos. This is how I try to organize my home! Instead of buying more storage containers, it prioritizes placement, accessibility, and routines that improves functionality.

When should I buy storage organizers?

I suggest using storage organizers and racks after decluttering and after deciding where everything should go permanently.
