Ai Interior Design Software Tools

As a designer, I have a love/hate relationship with artificial intelligence tools. On one hand, I get the appeal, it’s so nice to input something and have an idea whipped up for you. But, on the other hand, my creative brain screams what about the authenticity, the creativity, the beauty of imperfections? Ultimately, I think that AI has it’s place, even with home design, though I hope it can be used in moderation alongside real creative ideas. All that said, I’m sharing some of the top Ai interior design software tools and my personal opinions after trying each of them.

Here, I used a common Ai tool to ‘redecorate’ my funky living room on the left. This was a 1920’s home that had lots of quirks and it’s much smaller than it seems here. The Ai tool gave some good general layout ideas (a round coffee table and good size rug) but it doesn’t account for the actual function and some things are completely off – like the very low sconces, yikes!

Most Ai interior design software tools tend to try to make spaces look “perfect” which always ends up feeling a little off. I mean, I did write a case for Imperfect Home Styling, but that said, most of these tools can help give a broad inspiring concept.

Planner 5D AI

As an all around platform, Planner 5D pretty much does it all. This Ai interior design software helps create floor plans, room layouts, and auto-furnish rooms with a drag and drop tools. Overall, it’s pretty intuitive and easy to use. I think it’s great for DIYers or designers wanting quick mockups.

With the free plan you can create a floor plan with furniture layout. However, like other tools, it’s suggests placement in ways that do not always work in a room. For example, when I used it to create a living room floor plan in an L shaped room, it suggest a rug placement that wouldn’t work with the corner. The professional plans have more 3D options and pricing starts at $4.99 monthly.

RoomGPT

This Ai interior design software tool lets you upload a photo of your room or home exterior and create a rendering in various styles. RoomGPT is ideal for instant visual ideas and they allow one free credit without signing up. From there, it includes tiered pricing for various credits. They seem to have sales often.

However, I found the app severely lacking in design sense and originality. I uploaded my living room photo (above) and asked it to redesign in a “Coastal” theme (one of their preloaded options). The result is a travesty to the design world. Not to mention it turned my piano into a second fireplace. This might be fun or addictive but I wouldn’t make big design decisions using this tool.

Home Designs AI

This super straight forward Ai design software tool boasts a lot of press mentions. Home Designs Ai states you can upload a photo, choose preferences, and then generate and use the results.

I haven’t personally tried this tool as they do not have a free plan (so unfortunate!) but the images they show on the site are promising.

Homestyler

Part of the established Homestyler brand (originally launched in 2009), this site is a common Ai interior design software tools for designers, builders, real estate, and homeowners.

They claim you can upload a photo, choose a style (e.g., Japandi, Modern Farmhouse), and generate AI-guided redesigns that furnish and style your space. In this way it’s good for visualizing furniture placement and layouts.

That said, this whole platform hurts my eyeballs – the layout and design feels gimmicky like a video game. I’m sure some folks like that but I find it really distracting from the actual interior design. They do have a basic free plan which does seem to offer more than other tools.

DecorMatters AI

This mobile app with AI combines design with a social platform feel. While you can use it to create furniture arrangements of actual spaces, this feature has a hefty weekly charge. The free plan provides design challenges which they say helps build your skills.

I’ve tried it a bit and I can see how it might be fun, though not something I’d use professionally. I think it’s best for casual users or social media creators.

Collov.ai

Collov.ai is a virtual staging tool designed for real estate agents and room stagers. However, it could be useful to homeowners as well. It allows you to upload a room, it will clear of existing furniture, and then generate a few layout ideas.

In my opinion, it seems somewhat helpful if you’re struggling to visualize an empty space. It seems to keep some of the architectural details, like in the example I used above, it kept the ceiling soffits which is crucial. However, it placed the couch in front of a fireplace. Yikes!

Some of the design elements are also questionable. Like when I entered the prompt, “add artwork,” it generated a completely abstract artwork that doesn’t fit the space in style or proportion.

Ai Tools FAQs

Can AI tools help me create floor plans?

Yes! Tools like Planner 5D, Homestyler, Magicplan, and Floorplanner let you build floor plans with drag and drop tools. Many offer options to include window, door, and fireplace placements.

Is my data safe when uploading room photos?

From what I’ve researched, many reputable tools (IKEA, Homestyler, Wayfair) encrypt uploads and follow privacy policies. I would be cautious and check policies before uploading a photo.

Are AI design tools accurate for real life dimensions?

Some apps (like IKEA Kreativ, Magicplan) offer accurate measurements and placement, but many AI tools (like RoomGPT, Decorify) generate inspirational visuals but distorted proportions. I suggest double checking dimensions before purchasing furniture or making design decisions.

Final Thoughts on Ai Interior Design Tools

I hope this post is helpful in outlining some of the most common Ai Interior Design Software Tools. As you can see there are many options, and many I haven’t even listed here. I’m sure I’ll be adding more in the future. All of these tools have some benefits or might be fun in their own way, but like all technology there are clear limitations. From distorted furniture to incorrect proportions and layouts that just don’t work, it’s important to keep these details in mind when using Ai decor tools.
