Paint Color Trends 2025
I’m a neutral gal at heart. Give me all the white, black, wood, and plants. In fact, that might be the reason you’re here! And even though you won’t find any bright colors in my space, I still like to keep an eye on what’s happening in the home design world color-wise. In addition to some not so favorites, I’m excited to see some interesting takes on neutrals. And looking ahead, I’ve noticed a few paint color trends for 2025. I’m breaking them down here along with some practical ways to use them!
I’d describe the paint color trends I’m seeing as moody, muted, and earthy. They all seem like colors you’d very much find in nature and many have some deep, thoughtful hues.
1. Muted Colors
One of the biggest paint color trends for 2025 is without a doubt the abundance of muted shades. Even some of the brightest & light colors are appearing more muted in nature.
What do we mean by muted? Well, muted colors, are more subdued and less saturated. They are softer and less intense. Muted colors are often created by adding shades of gray or a complementary color to reduce brightness.
This makes them easier to include in existing design and they can act as more of a neutral. I definitely see this trend popping up everywhere – even car manufacturers have taken the lead here! Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2025 (see below), a heathered plum, is the perfect definition of a muted color.
2. Earthy Tones
Earthy colors are exactly what they sound like. This paint color trend includes hues you’d find in natural elements and landscapes. Think warm, muted shades that remind you of nature – rocks, soils, flowers, or plants.
You won’t find electric or bright colors with earthy shades, it’s all about a more relaxing, natural vibe. Imagine deep brown, terracotta, and mossy green.
3. Moody Hues
Moody paint colors are deep, rich tones like charcoal, navy, or forest green that create a cozy and dramatic vibe. Because these colors absorb rather than reflect light, they bring a sense of warmth and coziness, perfect for making spaces feel inviting and intimate.
Benjamin Moore Color of the Year 2025
Benjamin Moore went all out embracing the muted color trend with their 2025 Color of the Year, Cinnamon Slate. It’s a muted, deep plum with brownish undertones giving it cozy, earthy, romantic vibes.
Because of it’s low saturation and hints of warm brown, it acts a little bit like a neutral, making it easy to incorporate into current home decor.
While I personally prefer a more organic modern design with blacks, whites, and wood – Cinnamon Slate offers a an opportunity to include a bit of variety. While I likely would not use this paint color, I could easily rotate in landscape art prints or throw pillows to embrace this color trend. I’ve gathered up some of my favorite Cinnamon Slate home decor below to make it easy.
- Mauve Hills Art Print at Juniper Print Shop (my favorite art source)
- Azalea Pillow Cover – great mix of texture, I’d for sure grab this one
- Plummy Lumbar Pillow
- Earthy Ceramic Vase
- Preserved Ruscus Branch – I’m a big fan of dried botanicals
- Patterned Area Rug
- Clay Dipping Bowls – love this matte finish
- Muted Linen Throw Blanket
- Rounded Clay Table Lamp
- Cinnamon Slate Peel & Stick Paint Sample
Sherwin Williams Color Capsule 2025
Surprise! Sherwin Williams went rogue and instead of choosing one color for 2025, they went for a whole collection! This year, SW chose a “Color Capsule” of nine versatile hues with a nod to the earthy paint color trend.
While I really like the neutral White Snow (though not as much as Pure White) and even the warmth of Sunbleached, the other traditional colors just don’t speak to my design. I wanted to love Clove, described as an “almost black” but for me, the brown comes through too strongly and somehow feels less modern.
Key Takeaways
Paint Color Trends for 2025 are all about muted and moody. Earthy elements make it easier to add into existing home decor and I have some tips on How to Authentically Add Color to Your Home.
However, use these trends just like any other – look for inspiration and stay true to what you love.
Despite all these updates, I still love my tried and true Neutral Paint Colors.
