Best Neutral Rugs for Every Room
If you’re looking to take a space to the next level, a good rug might be just the thing you need! Admittedly, for many years, I completely underestimated the power of a rug. Not only do they serve a practical purpose by protecting floors, they all define a space meaning that the furniture feels more grounded and not just floating around. After trying out several options, I’ve rounded up some of my tried and true neutral rugs!

Neutral Rugs are my go-to floor covering. They are easy to incorporate and immediately freshen up a room. I love Geometric Patterned Rugs and often look for easy to care for materials. Here are some of my favorite I’ve used in my home and have stood the test of time and trends:

Shop Neutral Rugs
- Entryway Rug – This rug is thick and durable with natural fibers to handle all that comes inside! I use it in our entryway and it stands the test of time. It’s not a soft and fluffy rug, but great for functionality
- Bedroom Area Rug – Soft and plush for cozy bedroom vibes, definitely one of my all time favorites. I’ve used it in different bedrooms and love it every time
- Family Room Rug – Thin, non-slip rug for a space that gets a lot of use! I’ve used this exact one in our family room and later in a playroom and office. It is workhorse of neutral rugs!
- Accent Rug (linked to similar) – Little accent rug with with lots of texture and contrast – I’ve used in the back entry way and also in a bathroom.
- Geometric Living Room Rug – This large cozy rug is still a favorite, five years later. I’ve used it in different living spaces and it adapts and makes each one amazing
- Outdoor Rug – This exact coverin is super durable and easy to wash – it essentially made me fall in love with rugs in outdoor spaces.
Neutral Rugs in My Home

1. Entryway Rug
Living out in the country with two boys means my entryway gets a lot of wear and tear! For this space, I chose a thick and durable jute rug that holds up against all that comes its way. Update – I’ve later used this exact rug on our covered front porch layered under the welcome mat. The natural fibers withstand the elements (not getting wet) and keep dirt from tracking indoors.

2. Bedroom Area Rug
I chose this soft, boho style rug last year as part of an overall refresh and it’s one of my all time favorites! It’s a really nice shade of off-white with a large geometric print and tassels to add some extra texture. Tassels might be as practically in heavy trafficked areas like a family room, but they are perfect in bedroom with minimal foot traffic. I love how the design adapts to many different styles: organic modern, boho, farmhouse.

3. Family Room Rug
This room is small but mighty! This is our cuddle area, hangout zone, and movie night spot. So, I needed a rug that could handle it all. I chose a low pile, which means it’s flatter and less plush, Moroccan style rug. The low pike makes it easier to vacuum and withstands the high traffic in this area. Even though it’s a light neutral, the geometric pattern to hides stains and crumbs – common in this house.

4. Accent Rug
Can you have too many accent rugs? It seems like there is always a new space that needs a little rug! I love this Woven Accent Rug for all the texture and contrast – it’s used here in the door leading to our garage. Because woven rugs often slide a lot, I use a pad to keep it safe. This felt rug pad is a favorite!
I’ve also switched things up and used this same rug in the guest bathroom which is used pretty often. It holds up and is much more functional than a soft plush bathroom mat.

5. Living Room Rug
When rug shopping for this space, I had a few boxes I needed to check off – big, thick, soft, neutral, and geometric. This Emlenton Shag Rug checks them all! Our living is one of the biggest spaces in the house with somewhat of an open floor plan. The entry way just spills right into this space and it also leads to the open dining room. The rug defines this area – which is just a fancy way of saying, it gives an outline for your eyeballs, like “look, here is the living room.”
Because we use this space for games, reading, and hosting company, I wanted something that felt really cozy and easy to sit on. Because it’s pretty thick and plush, it’s comfy for sitting around the table and makes the whole space just feel more welcoming. (Ps. it’s more of an ivory color but not as yellow as the product photo.)

6. Patio Outdoor Rug
Last year, I refreshed our covered deck area and chose this Geometric Outdoor Rug for durability and contrast. I actually love this rug so much, I would consider using this indoors in an area like our dining room or playroom where an easy to clean rug would come in handy!
Truly, I thought outdoor rugs were a little unnecessary. But this rug really changed my mind – it’s creates a truly welcoming space and easy to sweep off or clean.
Final Thoughts
I hope this post gives some ideas on geometric neutral rugs and how to use them in your space. I still own many of these rugs five-six years down the line and I’d still recommend them! In addition to patterns and colors, it’s super important to find the right proportion for your room. So be sure to check out my Choosing Area Rug Size Guide for tips and common mistakes to avoid.
