Blinds.com Review – Window Shades
For years, it seemed the only window covering update was those white vinyl wood blinds. They’re functional, simple, and definitely an upgrade from the metal flimsy Venetian shades of bygone years. But window coverings always seemed like a major project. Shades, blinds, curtains – how to choose? And more importantly, how to get the right ones for my windows? Well, about 7 years ago I discovered online custom window coverings and life hasn’t been the same. I ordered woven wood shades, custom sized for my home and it was a game changer. I’ve created many posts praising their attributes. Here, I’m sharing my totally honest, unpaid Blinds.com review.
Blinds.com Review Overview
Like other window covering sites, Blinds.com is an online site that allows you to customize window coverings by choosing styles, sizes, and all the details online then delivered straight to your door. There is no salesperson coming out to measure or show you samples. This means no phone calls you have to avoid from here to eternity if you change your mind or consider options.
I decided to try this option during our major home remodel. I was doing things room by room so this allowed me to choose and order just for the space (and budget!) I was working with. I also really wanted woven wood shades as I looked to create more texture and warmth in our mostly white space.
I did loads of research and got more samples than I knew what to do with. Ultimately, I went with Blinds.com as they struck balance of affordability, color options, and in deliverability for window shades.
Ordering Experience
In general, Blinds.com is pretty easy to navigate. There are lots of window covering styles and options to choose between. The actual customization is pretty straight forward as it guides you through each step with prompts and visuals. They have options for size, valance, borders, cords vs cordless, and more. Every time, I just walk through the prompts.
I’ve ordered many times for different rooms and homes over the years and always had a lot of success. It’s even easy to order samples – though my favorite colors, Kula Sandy Beach is hidden and the “more colors” tab is hard to find.
Once ordered, it’s always been fairly quick to receive the customized window coverings.
Window Coverings Variety
While I’m basing my Blinds.com review mostly on woven wood shades, they do offer a lot of different types of window coverings including cellular, roller, Roman shades, wood, vertical blinds and more. I even ordered their white vinyl blinds for one specific window to get a home ready for sell.
For a couple homes and client spaces, I’ve ordered their woven wood shades in Kula Sandy Beach. I like that it can be customized to almost any size and offers a lot of custom options. As for as color options, I’d say their are almost too many options – many are similar to each other and I personally think a narrower selection of top selling and neutral options would be more helpful.
Shipping & Packaging
After placing a Blinds.com order, it usually takes about two weeks to receive. One order took especially long but I think that was due to global issues beyond control. They seem to make the custom shades fairly fast. I’ve always received all the necessary hardware and parts.
Window Shades Installation Process
Installing Blinds.com shades are incredibly easy. I’ve installed both woven wood shades and vinyl blinds – both using the inside mount option. While I do know my way around a power drill, I think most people could install window coverings. It really just involves pre-drilling holes, attaching a little bracket, then sliding the shades bar into the bracket.
I did have some difficult installing the vinyl blinds on an especially large window. I looked to the Blinds.com site for support and ended up talking to an actual human who helped me troubleshoot. While I was a little frustrated, it was incredibly helpful to talk with someone who could help me through the process.
Quality & Performance
Overall, I think the pricing and quality are on par with other window shade covering options. I’ve installed many of these shades in various windows in a variety of homes over the years and I’ve been happy with each one. That said, for this Blinds.com review, I should add there are some customization options that will help achieve a higher end look or increase functionality:
- Cordless option is more expensive but definitely adds a classier touch
- Woven shades have an edge binding option which I do not prefer. However, one set did have ever so slightly frayed edges so if this was a concern I’d go with that option
- There is also an option for a blackout liner which I added for my bedroom woven shades – this was definitely a great feature
Blinds.com Customer Service
I’ve had good experiences with Blinds.com customer service. They provide order and shipping updates which is helpful as you work on the timing of a project. As mentioned above, their customer service was responsive to an installation issue I faced and I spoke with an actual human!
I have not needed to return shades or blinds but have had concerns addressed promptly. For example, there was a huge shipping delay during the pandemic and they responding professionally with an accurate estimate.
Window Shades Pricing & Value
Blinds.com window coverings are a generally affordable home update. I’ve found their shades and blinds to be comparable in pricing and value to other brands like Home Depot, Shade Store, Select Blinds, and others. They tend to have many sales so I often measure and select my shades in advance and then wait for a good sale to purchase. I will definitely continue using them and already have a few more projects lined up.
Of course, there are more expensive options out there but after researching, I’m not sure that path is worth it to me. These always fit the bill, offered custom options, and stood the test of time.
Yes! Blinds.com provides free fabric and material samples so you can see color, texture, and light filtering in person before ordering. You can typically request up to 10 samples at no cost. I’ve ordered samples many times though I still go back to Kula Sand Beach for the woven wood shades.
Yes, Blinds.com offers the SureFit Guarantee on many custom products. Although I’ve never used it, if you mismeasure, they’ll remake your blinds for free (you just pay for shipping). I’d double check though before ordering.
Yes! Most Blinds.com products are designed for DIY installation and come with easy-to-follow instructions. I’ve installed so many of these in different homes. The site also offers video tutorials and live customer support. You could always hire a handy person to install if you felt more comfortable. I’d get everything prepped in advance to save on cost.
Final Verdict on Blinds.com
For this Blinds.com review, I’m taking into account my ten or so orders from their company. I would absolutely recommend these to homeowners. The biggest tip I can suggest is just to measure the window very carefully and specifically. For example, if it’s 30 ⅞” wide, use that measurement, don’t round up.
It think these are best for those who are looking for a solid home update at a reasonable cost. Window coverings offer both function and design so you there’s a major impact in replacing old or broken shades.
