How to Choose a Couch – Size & Styles Guide
Because I’ve moved a lot and designed many spaces, I’ve faced the challenge of choosing a couch more times than I can remember. At first, it seems really simple – just pick the right size, but oh no, there are sooo many variables to consider. Not just the length, but the full dimensions, the size of the room, how it will be used, the color needed for contrast, even the flooring comes into play. I’ve gathered up all my favorite tips, things to consider, along with some of my favorites here to show you how to choose a couch and make it easy!
What to Consider When Choosing a Couch
- Color: I always vote for neutral couches. Which doesn’t mean boring! I just be sure to look for pieces that aren’t cool neutrals (“frost” and “steel” grays are usually cool colors)
- Contrast: Looking for ways to add contrast is one of my very favorite design tricks. I needed a sofa that would contrast with our wood floors, cream rug and newly black painted piano.
- Sofa Legs: The base of couch often really signifies the decor style so choose wisely. Tapered legs are great for mid-century modern. Low profile leans towards traditional and block feels more transitional.
- Material: I typically go with woven fabrics to add some depth so the couch doesn’t feel “flat.” Plus, it hides stains better, what can I say?
- Shape: To keep things simple, I prefer minimal sofas and then liven them up with pillows and throw blankets
Best Sizing Tips for A Couch
When it comes to buying a couch, there is one tip that works really well and that is using the 2/3 guideline. Essentially, this means that you look at the wall or general space, measure it, and then choose a couch that is 2/3 that length. This is a tried and true method that makes a couch or sofa feel balanced and proportionate in a space. Of course, there might be other factors and it’s doesn’t work everywhere but it’s one of my favorite guideline (and works for other things too!).
In practice, this would look like choosing an 80″ long couch that is 120″ wide. These do not need to be exact but give a rough estimate of what would be proportionate for the space.
I also like to use painter’s tape to measure out and show the approximate size of a couch in a space before buying. This gives me an idea of how it will fit in a space and identify any issues – like conflict with other furniture pieces, affect the walking pathway, would be off center, etc. Those are easier to fix before the couch arrives!
Mistake to Avoid When Buying a Couch
| Mistake | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Buying without measuring | Sofas almost always look smaller in showrooms |
| Prioritizing looks over comfort | You use your couch daily |
| Ignoring fabric durability | Light fabrics can create stress in real life |
| Choosing trendy over timeless | Large furniture is expensive to replace |
| Buying a sofa thatโs too big | It can make the entire room feel cramped |
| Forgetting delivery dimensions | Hallways and stairwells matter too |
Couch Styles Guide
As you’re choosing a couch, you probably realized they come in so many different styles, it can be a little overwhelming. While there are many commonalities, there little differences that have a big impact on function and design. In general, there are more formal and more casual options and those with very specific design styles, like mid-century modern. Use this to determine which sofa style works for your space and needs.
Neutral Living Room Couch Ideas
In many of the living room spaces I’d styled, I like to use neutral couches as they are easy to style and are versatile. In general, I like to contrast with the flooring so for darker rugs or floors, I use a lighter couch. And, for the rooms with light colored rugs, I love my big dark gray couch. These can easily be styled with layered throw pillows to change the look. I’ve gathered up some of my favorites to make choosing a couch even easier.

How to Choose a Couch FAQs
A well made couch should last about 7โ15 years, depending on use and construction. Look for hardwood frames, reinforced joints, and high-density foam cushions for durability. Rotating cushions and using a fabric protector can also extend its lifespan.
A good guideline for couch sizes is to measure the room and leave at least 30โ36 inches for walkways and 18 inches between the couch and coffee table. Also, a couch length that is 2/3 the length of the wall is a great general guideline.
The words are often used interchangeably and seem to be used regionally. Traditionally, couch implies a more casual, lounge friendly piece. Sofa is considered a bit more formal and structured in design.
Today, most furniture retailers use the terms the same way.
There are many great options for buying a couch. Some of the best include Article, Costco, and West Elm as they have strong reputations for durability, style, and customer service.
