Changing Home Decor Trends – 2026
Have you noticed that home decor trends are shifting lately? Itโs not just in your head, I’ve notice some real changes in home design lately. And honestly, I think a lot of these shifts are going to feel like a relief. And while Iโm not someone who chases trends, I do think understanding them can be helpful. Not so you follow them, but so you can feel more confident in your choices. Here, I’m going to cover some of the major home decor trends I see changing in 2026 and beyond.
1. Natural Wood Cabinets Are Back
One major home decor trend I see happening is that natural wood cabinets are coming back. For years, it felt like every kitchen was being painted. There were no oak cabinets safe from a can of paint. But now weโre seeing a clear shift back to natural wood kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
For awhile, we saw white cabinets, black cabinets, and fully refaced kitchens as the ultimate goal in kitchen and bathroom design. In my last home, I updated the kitchen and refaced dark cabinets that were pretty worn down, so sometimes painting does make sense. But, overall, the shift towards wood
What this means for you
If you have wood cabinets, like I do! You donโt need to feel pressure to change them. Instead, you can update your space in simpler ways:
- Sand and refinish for a more natural tone
- Swap out cabinet doors for a more modern style
- Update hardware (hinges, knobs, pulls)
- Paint just the island for contrast
This mix of wood + painted elements is something weโre seeing more and more. Personally, I love it. You might even consider visiting the ideas of wood shelving; read my pros and cons to open shelves for more ideas.
2. All White Isnโt the Only Option
Another home decor trend that is changing is the default of painting everything white. There was a long stretch where everything from cabinets to trim to doors and stair railings were all painted white. And it makes sense, white is crisp and classic. But weโre now seeing a shift toward more variety and warmth.
There’s definitely a change to include more natural wood trim, wood banisters and railings, along with mixed materials. For example, in my own home, I recently replaced windows and chose a natural wood trim instead of painting everything white. It kept the comfortable Northwest Contemporary vibe and makes for a lot of warmth and charm.
On the more bold side, weโre also seeing things like color drenching, where walls, trims, and doors are all painted the same, usually darker, color. This creates a really dramatic room design. Overall, white paint isn’t going anywhere for trims and cabinets, but it’s definitely no longer the default option.
3. Warmer Paint Colors Trend
We’re seeing home decor trend changes in the paint color world too. Across the board from different paint brands, we’re seeing a lot of warmer, earthier paint colors. This is a major shift from previous years. If you remember the early 2000s and 2010s, things leaned cool with gray floors, gray walls, and cool toned finishes
Of course, there were always warmer paint colors and millennial beige was doing it’s thing but we’re really seeing a full court press of even warmer beiges and soft tans. I think this is the pendulum swinging to create a more familiar, comfortable vibe.
We can see this pretty clear with Sherwin Williams Paint Color of the Year for 2026 – Accessible Beige. I’m not sure it was a crowd favorite but you can read more on my post about paint color trends. Personally, I tend to gravitate toward balanced neutrals with a touch of warmth – not overly yellow, but definitely not cool gray.

Final Thoughts on Changing Home Decor Trends
Overall, I think there are a lot of positive changes happening in the home decor space. I think these changing trends give people a lot of more freedom to enjoy their homes and not feel obligated to more rigid “rules” or expectations – like cabinets and trim must be white. From embracing natural wood to using a more varied approach including color drenching and warmer paint colors, there is a big shift in how we see the space around us.
