For two months I’ve focused on the inside of our new house – remodeling it so we can move in next week. I went from dream ideas to now basically just getting it done and liveable (yikes!). With the hardwood floors in last week, cabinets installed yesterday and the trim finishing up this weekend, I’m looking ahead to the outside with modern home exterior ideas!
You might remember that during the home buying process our focus was on schools and land. I felt confident that I could make any house our home. We’re flexible and easy going people (unless you try taking my coffee away!) and ended up finding a daylight ranch on 3 acres. It’s brown and square and true 1970’s architecture. It’s my mission to add some modern exterior design to our humble abode.
My first task is painting the house black. I know, I know. It’s bold & wild. Most people just look at me funny. But, I’m convinced it’s the right choice. In addition to this beauty, I’ve gathered other stunning black houses here.
One of the main reasons I love black paint for our modern ranch home exterior is that it creates a bold backdrop for plants and landscaping. You know I’m all about my plants! Looking for more outdoor design ideas? Check out my back boho patio inspiration.
(we chose Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black)
The minute I saw this wood door at Becki Owens, I knew it was just what we needed for our modern ranch exterior. We searched high and low and found a door made from Douglas Fir (our Oregon state tree!) that we are excited to install. I think this will add just the right amount of rustic.

Fingers crossed I’ll have our own exterior photos to share soon!
