How did you make your shelves?

Hands down, this is the most requested topic of our home! My wood shelves! This makes me incredibly happy because they are also my most special and favorite DIY project. Just to summarize, they are made from white oak and I used black shelf brackets from my brother’s business, Cascade Iron Co.

While we made the shelves from a salvaged oak tree, it’s easy to find lumber from the hardware store or even a few places on line. My shelves are 11.25″ deep, about 1.25″ thick, and 36″ long. I love natural wood and kept these raw, protecting with natural wax.

Once you choose your shelving, it’s easy to select brackets that work. Check out my complete step by step post on How to Create Open Shelving.

interior design questions about white oak hardwood floors

What kind of flooring do you have?

The next question I often receive it is about our flooring. Are they hardwood? Yes! They are white oak. How did you finish them so they aren’t yellow? We used Bona water based finish and top coat. This keeps them natural!

These floors were the highlight of our remodel when we purchased this house last year. It completely changed the entire vibe and look.

Although I totally love these floors, I did share 5 Things I Wish I Knew About Solid Hardwood Floors. I also created a post on I how I Care for Solid Wood Floors to keep them looking like new.

woven wood shades for texture and warmth

Where did you purchase your woven wood window shades?

After ordering a few samples, I eventually chose the Woven Wood Shades in Kula Sandy Beach from Blinds.com. It’s super simple to measure windows and they make them to exact measurements.

I’ve ordered them for several rooms in our home including our Bedroom Refresh and Home Office. I think I’ll write a separate review post for these woven wood shades, but overall, I’ve had a good experience with them.

I created an entire post with a guide on ordering Woven Wood Shades in case that helps with choosing between all the options.

Which Interior Paint Did You Use?

I’m pretty loyal to my paint choices! I know what I love and typically stick to it. When we moved in last year, one of the very first things we did was paint the entire interior with Chantilly Lace from Benjamin Moore.

This is my very favorite white. I also used it the beach house and it’s all around a lovely, neutral, white.

I also have a pop of black throughout the house. After painting one wall with Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, I can’t stop. This a neutral shade that is just a wee bit lighter than a true black. Here is my round up of all the paints I use in our home: The Best Neutral Paints.

modern ceiling fan for the living room

Where is the Modern Ceiling Fan from?

Finally, one of the last interior design questions I receive is about our modern ceiling fan. And I get it! I searched long and hard for a ceiling fan that did not remind me of grandma’s house (no offense grandma!). For some reason, it was harder than I thought to find a fan that checked all the boxes.

common interior design questions about our modern living room ceiling fan

I ended up going with this one from Hunter Fan Co. It has a simple design, (relatively) low profile, included light, neutral wood blades, and fairly affordable. I shared more opinions here: Modern Ceiling Review of the Cranbrook.

Hello! Thank you so much for your kind words! I ended up going with a local cabinet company that creates them and sells directly from their warehouse. It cut out the middle man which saved some money. We definitely splurged in other areas 🙂 Hope this helps! Allisa
